Broadland Funeral Service is situated in Wroxham very close to the Norfolk Broads.

The building was previously used as a veterinary practice but was later sold to a local businessman called Gordon Read, a boat builder and carpenter, who became an undertaker. This business was then officially named Gordon Read Funeral Directors.

In 1987, Gordon passed away and Nicholas Taylor took over the business, renaming it Broadland Funeral Service.

“Nicholas also owned Peter Taylor Funeral Service, and Gordon Rooney Funeral Service in Norwich.”

Broadland Funeral Service was run originally by Kay Stead, and Funeral Director, Stephen Peregrine.

At the time, there were also two other Funeral Directors in the area, F A Coman and Son of Coltishall and Norgate Funeral Service of Horstead. When F A Coman and Son closed down, Broadland looked after many of the funerals thereafter. Norgate was eventually taken over by Broadland when the business began to decline.

In the late 1980’s Anglia Funeral Services was formed with the merger of Peter Taylor Funeral Service, Gordon Rooney’s and Broadland Funeral Services. This also included Norgate’s Funeral Directors in Horstead. Duckers Funeral Service in Aylsham was added to the group along with Breckland Funeral Service at Watton, Rackhams at Diss and R J Bartram at Wymondham.

“The three main owners were Nicholas Taylor, Richard Bartram and Harold Rackham.”
